Naw Ruz

As part of our Celebrations Inquiry unit, Mrs Assadi came to Rata Block to tell us about Naw Ruz, The Persian New Year.

Naw Ruz celebrations start on the 21st March and last for 12 days.
In preparation for Naw Ruz, families spring clean their houses, do lots of cooking and baking, and buy new clothes.

A special cloth is put on a table and the Haft-seen items
are placed on it.

Haft-seen means seven S's.
Seven items that start with S in the Persian language.

Sabzeh
Sprouts growing in a dish to represent rebirth.

Samanu
A sweet pudding to represent success.

Senjed
Dried fruit to represent love.

Seer
Garlic to represent medicine.

Seeb
An apple to represent health and beauty.

Somac
Powdered berries to represent the colour of sunrise.

Serkeh
Vinegar to represent patience.

Other special things can be on the table as well.
A goldfish in a bowl, a hyacinth plant, coins, rose water,
candles, a Holy Book and decorated eggs.

Families visit each other and exchange gifts.
Children are given money and treats.

On the last day of Naw Ruz, everyone goes
outside and has a picnic together.

A BIG thank you
to Mrs Assadi and Sara
for sharing Naw Ruz celebrations with us.
